The Asian Studies program leading to an MA degree is an interdisciplinary program designed to enable a student to acquire deeper understanding and a wider perspective of many Asian culture areas that cannot be obtained ordinarily through concentration in a single discipline. Broad theoretical and practical issues and topics affecting Asian societies and cultures are examined from a Philippine perspective, applying various methodologies. The program offers courses that focus on a given culture area (e.g. Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia). Students are required to specialize on any of the following: China Studies, Japan Studies, Korea Studies, Southeast Asia Studies, West Asia (Middle East) studies. The doctoral program is designed to ensure the solid foundation and grounding in the field of anthropology. The student begins to focus on their specific areas of research and specialization upon completion of the core courses. A doctoral student must complete thirty six (36) units of coursework and obtain a weighted average of 1.75 or better to qualify for the comprehensive examination. After passing the Ph.D. Qualifying Examination, a student is considered a doctoral candidate. The student then enrolls twelve (12) units for the Anthro 400 - Dissertation. Admission Requirements for Graduate Program
1. The applicant must be a holder of at least a baccalaureate degree or it's equivalent from U.P. Or any other recognized institution of higher learning.
2. A baccalaureate degree holder must have obtained a general weighted average grade of 2.0 or better for UP graduates and 1.75 or better for non-UP graduates.
3. The applicant must take the sit-in essay exam and present himself/herself for interview.
4. The applicant must pay a non-refundable fee of P100 if a Filipino citizen, P200 if a resident alien, and US$25 if a foreign citizen. Applicants whose native language is not English are required to submit a certificate English proficiency with at least a 500 TOEFL score, unless they come from institutions where the medium of instruction is English.
Documents Required
1. Two (2) copies of accomplished application form, with 2" x 2" ID picture.
2. Original and photocopy of complete Transcript of Records (including graduate studies, if any).
3. Original and photocopy of NSO-certified Birth Certificate.
4. Three (3) recommendation letters from former professors and/or employers.
