Why did I choose this school:
You should really raise your standards when it comes to choosing your school because the school would be the most influential agent for someone's growth in terms of education and the preparation for your future job. I can say that the University of San Agustin was able to meet my standards even though Biology is not the flagship program of the University. There are better schools in Western Visayas when it comes to BS Biology program but what makes the University of San Agustin stand-out among all of them is the university's continuous pursuit of knowledge and new information through research. I can say that the University of San Agustin is starting to become a research-centered institution, a good quality of an academic community. Also, studying in a Catholic school isn't a bad choice in the first place. It has it's own perks at some point. I believed that the University of San Agustin can prepare me be the professional that I envision myself to be. And it did.
About University of San Agustin:
Being a Catholic school is what I like most about the university. It enabled me to experience holistic education without sacrificing the school's standards in terms of competence. The university really embodies and practices it's three core moral values; Unitas, Caritas and Veritas. I like that we have monthly masses, and we celebrate important Catholic events such as feasts of saints. It makes the stay in the university more fun and meaningful.
The faculty and staff of the university ain't bad at all. Professors were really competent instructors. Some even are known and well-respected in their chosen fields. Though you can't expect every one of them to be good to you all the time. There will be strict and disciplinarian teachers who will push you to your limits but I think that's just part of college life. You'll learn a lot from them especially from the "terror" ones. That's one challenge in college, I guess.
In addition, maybe they should invest in the proper ventilation of rooms since not all rooms were air-conditioned but rooms are comfortable still. The library is well-equipped with learning materials. The university is not lagging behind when it comes to equipment and facilities compared to other schools. In fact, the university houses high-end, modern and expensive facilities that no other universities in Western Visayas and even in Manila have.
As a science major, another important facility for us would be the laboratories. The laboratories in San Agustin are up to date and on top of the line. That's why it's no question why the university can produce well-rounded graduates in courses such as Medical Laboratory Science, Pharmacy, Chemistry and Biology. These laboratories are a good training ground for students.
Generally, Biology may not be the flagship program of the University but the faculty, facilities and the educational system is competent enough to produce qualified graduates who can excel in the field of Biology. My four years of stay in the University equipped me with the necessary skills and knowledge to prepare me for my future job.
My current job:
As of now, I'm working as a Research Assistant at De La Salle University - Manila focusing on Biomedical Engineering. At the same time, taking my MS in Biology at the same university. Being a research assistant, I work with lead researchers and scientists during lab tests and experiments, process specimens and prepare the proper experimental set up, ensures the laboratory is well-stocked and resourced, maintains and operates standard laboratory equipment and lastly, follows and ensures strict safety procedures and safety checks. In simpler terms, I conduct research, work in a lab setting, and evaluate data.
How long did it take to find a job:
The University of San Agustin gave me my first job as Laboratory Technician/Assistant a month after graduation. I worked for almost 8 months there before I received a job offering at De La Salle University - Manila where I am currently working right now.
