Course description:
Aquaculture, the growing of aquatic organisms under controlled conditions, can make a unique contribution to nutrition in many parts of the world. Primarily, it has the potential of producing large quantities of lower - cost protein rich food, which would supplement the declining fish production from capture fishery. However, applied scientific, technological, and managerial skills are necessary in this endeavor.
The range of aquacultural practices relates to fish breeding, reproduction and propagation, nutrition, health control, water quality management and engineering. Aquaculture specialists need in - depth scientific training in combination with critical attitudes towards all aspects constraining aquaculture development.
The Master of Science in Aquaculture Program is planned and organized along the following considerations: the production of highly trained manpower who can provide innovative solutions to the problems in aquaculture, conduct applied and relevant research, develop technology, effect management of aquaculture projects, and competently teach tertiary level of fisheries education supportive of the economic blue - prints for the development of Mindanao in particular, and of the country in general.
