Course description:
Bachelor of Science and AgroForestry is a four year degree course that involves an inter disciplinary approach in carrying out the mandate of CBSUA as a Regional Agricultural Center (RAC’s) inBicol region. BS in Agroforestry started from Bachelor of Science inAgriculture major in Agro-Forestry.
The elevation of BSA AgroForestry to Bachelor of Science in AgroForestry recognizes the potentials of the course to help attain economic stability and socio – economic productivity that contribute the poverty alleviation. It is also a response to the surging interest in advancing AgroForestry education in the country as demonstrated in the efforts of Philippines Agro forestry Education network (PAFERN) and Environmental Education Network in the Philippines (EENP) to establish AgroForestry as a separate and distinct field of specialization.
AgroForestry is a multi-disciplinary and integrative field of learning agroforestry as a science and as a farmers practice embraces a wide range of disciplines. It is part and parcel of broader context of community-based natural resource management and rural development. It involves bio-physical sciences such as agriculture and forestry as well as socio-economic and local or indigenous culture. The development of Agroforestry also depends on community-based institutions and policies.
Learners of Agroforestry, therefore, need to be familiar with a wide range of disciplines related to natural resource management, which is the most common concept and approach in rural development. While the learner is not expected to become a specialist in many fields that are related to Agroforestry student should be able to understand, integrate and communicate concepts and ideas and utilize knowledge and skills from a range of disciplines adjacent to Agroforestry.
Specific Objectives:
The BS Agroforestry curriculum aims to develop well-rounded Agroforestry professionals who are:
1. Highly knowledgeable, skilled and competent with positive attitude in the dichotomy of knowledge in agriculture and forestry in the production, utilization and conservation of our environment and natural resource.
2. Capable of facilitating community organizing and development activities.
3. Capable of diagnosing problems, needs, opportunities and designing and implementing appropriate interventions.
4. Capable of conducting feasibility studies, entrepreneur projects, and or management plans.
5. Familiar with the current policies, rules, regulations, plans, programs, problems and issues affecting Agroforestry institutions involved in upland and rural development.
6. Capable of establishing, operating and managing agroforestry projects.
7. Capable of identifying, formulating and implementing Agroforestry research development and extension delivery.
