Why did I choose this school:
Scholarship. That was the only reason I enrolled in COC-Phinma.
Here's the story, I was ready and decided to really enroll myself at Mindanao University of Science and Technology (MUST) and take up IT when I received a text message from COC-Phinma telling me that I passed the 50% scholarship examination, mind you that exam happened like 5 months ago and I've been through a lot of brain-scraping, head-scratching scholarship examinations during that period, so I kind of like forgot that test even existed. So, going back, that moment marked the start of a new chapter in my life - College!
About COC PHINMA:
My first impression the time I set foot on COC-Phinma was like "Man, this school is small!". Well, it was and it still is. The campus is composed of 2 5-storey buildings connected with a bridge on the 2nd floor. The annex building was the bigger and more modern one and it is where the open-spaced quadrangle/ court is located. There is also a partially-covered roof deck at the top where the COC's TV station once was.
Cagayan de Oro College has been constantly improving since it has been acquired by PHINMA in 2005. Not only do they make the effort to improve the look and renovate the classrooms, but they also invest in facilities that will aid the school in providing the students the quality education they deserve. Facilities such is high-end computer laboratories is one. To date, there are already 5 computer laboratories with 30-50 computers each lab. The administration is still investing on more computers to cater to the increasing number of students every year.
COC has gardens on both buildings that offer a relaxing and stress-free ambiance. Perfect to all students who are looking to relax and socialize with friends. Faculty also has a lounge where they can sit back, relax and enjoy a movie, this faculty lounge is located just beside the canteen in 2nd floor of the Main Building.
If students want to study, COC Phinma's library is the place to go, it's located at the 3rd floor of the annex building and has a balcony which offers you a commanding view of the quadrangle, a perfect spot to watch activities that are being held there. One downside of the library is that it isn't air conditioned, so it gets really hot sometimes.
COC Phinma also has state-of-the-art AVRs that let you experience a good Dolby surround sound performances and presentations.
I would say the school isn't putting that much effort in hiring instructors. They hire people who are not competent in the field they are teaching. Although I am not saying that all of them are the same, but most of them are. In fact I have been a student of a couple of them, and they didn't even last long.
Animation specialization of COC Phinma's Information Technology may not be good enough, but it's Programming and Web Development programs are excellent. Most of my IT friends who enrolled to it became really successful professionals right now and are earning big bucks! So generally speaking, COC Phinma's IT program is one of the best in the city!
My current job:
I am currently working in Cleversoft, Inc., a software maintenance company in Cagayan de Oro. I work as a Customer Support Engineer. What I mainly do is make tutorial videos for a software. I also talk to our ISP clients and help them resolving issues they have with the software.
How long did it take to find a job:
I got a job right even before my graduation, I then started working 2 days after my graduation. But I only lasted a week as I was not comfortable with the workplace. A month after, I got hired by Convergys and flew to Cebu and worked there for 10 months as a Customer Service Rep.
