Why did I choose this school:
Honestly, it was a choice between UP Diliman and Ateneo. At the time, I had little idea of the reputations of universities. My decisions were based on what schools my older brothers chose. However, my parents and an older brother pressured me to go to Ateneo instead arguing that it was superior.
Retrospectively, they were right.
About Ateneo de Manila University:
For the atmosphere, it was fun and very open. At first, it can be very intimidating because almost all are smart but as you get used to it; you'll see that the competitive atmosphere can bring out the best in you.
The professors really know what they are talking about. For the faculty of the Biology department, they are really passionate about their subject matter. For the professors of the core subjects, it is to them I owe my ability to think. And more than that, my current maturity level.
The facilities are world class. The library is well-equipped. There is even a study center where there are numerous desks. Either you sleep on them, for those well-deserved in-between class breaks, or you study because it's a quiet place.
Being a graduate of BS Biology in Ateneo is a privilege. Not only do you get to learn from well-respected faculty, you also get formed as a person.
Because Ateneo requires all it's students to study courses not related to their respective majors, it brings out ideas and perspectives you would not have gained had you stuck with only courses relevant to your program.
For instance, not only do I have the analytical skills of a biologist; I can speak and write well because of the core subjects not related to my degree. Who can forget facing oral exams under Fr. Dacanay?
One instance in medical school wherein I can say Ateneo has an edge compared to other schools is when we were required to write essays for our Medical Ethics class. Out of my batch, my essays were graded high.
Beyond writing essays and speaking well, I can say what I am as a person right now would not have been possible if I had gone to another university.
My current job:
I'm currently a 2nd year medical student at SLCM-WHQM. I didn't have a hard time getting into medical schools. Out of my 3 choices, I got accepted into 2.
