◈ Studied BS in Geology
◈ At University Of The Philippines Diliman
◈ Graduated 2013

list bulletWhy did I choose Geology: There was really no plan of taking this course, besides Geology was not that famous among high school students, at least during my time. I just had to readmit from a business course to a science course because of the DOST scholarship. I enrolled in Geology even though I did not like it at first thinking that I can shift to another course which I like better. Geology also has one of the highest stipend for DOST scholarship, so it also became a motivation. However, during my first year, we had this subject on rocks and it really amazed me on how those simple rocks can tell stories about the planet we live in. This encouraged me more to continue with this course and eventually graduate among the few and the proud.

list bulletAbout my college education: I learned a lot from studying geology. Earth science takes up a little portion in our elementary and high school generally, so we only have a little idea on what this science is all about; but geology is a lot more than rocks and volcanoes. Everything on and in the earth actually is a scope of geology. Studying geology makes me appreciate the beauty and richness of our planet more and makes me realize the importance of taking good care of it.

Studying geology is not easy so as any other courses in UP, but if you learn how to have fun out of the difficulties, then it makes studying more enjoyable. Geology also took me to a lot of places without ruining my budget through sponsored field works. This is the most enjoyable part of studying geology, getting to a lot of places, interacting with different kinds of people, and having fun while learning. It is also fun not just experiencing the beauty of a place but also knowing how a certain place has formed in the past. It's like travelling to the past with our geologic imagination.

Failing at exams is a usual thing in UP, it is just part of the experience UP has to offer. In geology, more people shift in than out and these people stay, maybe because of the unique learning experience in geology. To succeed in geology, one just have to know how to enjoy while getting into a lot and different kinds of pressure. A game attitude is also a must since geology involves getting to new unexplored places and trying new things.

list bulletMy current job: I am an exploration geologist for a petroleum company.
We consider ourselves the heart of an oil & gas exploration company. We are in the technical side of the search for oil by using our geological knowledge on the formation of oil and the interpretation of the subsurface geology and structures where there can be accumulations of oil/gas.

list bulletAm I using what I learned in college: Yes. Aside from the geology itself which is very relevant to my current job, college also taught lessons on how to deal with people, how to react under pressure, and how to create immediate solutions to problems. These, I believe, are necessary and very helpful when it comes to life after college a.k.a. Employed life.

list bulletHow long did it take to find a job: 1 week :)

list bulletDo I recommend studying Geology: Of course.

In terms of employment opportunities, geology is a very diverse field so there are many options to consider after graduation. There is the industry (oil & gas, metals & mining, cement, etc.), the government (MGB, Phivolcs, DENR, DOST, DPWH, etc.), and the academe.

The salary level is of no question, the fresh graduates are compensated above average which may reach up to around Php 60,000 depending on the field. For experienced employees, based on what I know from my seniors, they are among the highest paid professionals. In fact, the geologists are the second highest paid professionals in the country according to the 2013 data from DOLE.

list bulletAdvice to people who are thinking of studying this course: If you are into adventures then Geology is right for you!

◈ Studied BS in Geology
◈ At University Of Southeastern Philippiines (USEP)
◈ Graduated 2011

list bulletWhy did I choose Geology: I wanted to take architecture but I chose geology because it was the only course available for enrollment when I applied for scholarship in USEP.

list bulletAbout my college education: The Geology class does not have practical field studies. It was more about reading books, and listening to lectures. The teachers did not explain the hard topics of the subjects or probably because the approach was new to me. I had to do my best to understand the subjects. It was hard studying, not because of the subjects but because it was really uncomfortable. Also the exams were very difficult because teachers wanted us to challenge our minds and think out of the box.

list bulletMy current job: I am now working in a small mining company in Compostela Valley. I do the examination and the determination of the types of rocks and if there is gold content in the samples. I work in the mining area.

list bulletHow long did it take to find a job: A year after graduation, I found work in this present company as one of the researchers.

list bulletDo I recommend studying Geology: This is a good course with much potential for high income. I have already seen people who have become geologists and are doing great in their career whether here or abroad because it is very in demand.

I recommend this course to those who like to be employed in the mining company or or in the environment sector. The income would be good, that’s what my friend in the Department of Environment and Natural Resources told me. And indeed, if you get to the right company, you'll definitely reap the fruits of your labor.

◈ Studied BS in Geology
◈ At University Of Southeastern Philippines
◈ Graduated 2017

list bulletWhy did I choose Geology: I chose BS in Geology because it is my dream to study volcanoes and to see actual flowing lavas. It is also recommended by my High School teachers as I have graduated in a science program during my secondary education.

list bulletAbout my college education: The scope of Geology is very broad. You should read and read many books and references in order to pass the exams. Patience and perseverance is the key to graduate in this course.

list bulletMy current job: I am currently working in a government institution in Metro Manila right now as a Science Research Specialist. We are currently working under a special project under DOST.

list bulletAm I using what I learned in college: It depends mainly on how you will cope with your lessons. I guess you should just try this course because this profession is cool.

list bulletHow long did it take to find a job: You should take first a board exam in geology before you can land a stable job in this profession. I was employed 3 or 4 months after passing the licensure exam.

list bulletDo I recommend studying Geology: In terms of employment, the mining industry is down as of the moment but this profession is not just focused in the field of mining. You just have to explore and you will find an interesting work right after you graduate and pass the board exam. Don't expect a high salary rate in your first job. Experience is the key for you to succeed not just in this profession but in any profession.

◈ Studied BS in Geology
◈ At UP Diliman
◈ Graduated 2013

list bulletWhy did I choose Geology: Actually, I'm a shiftee. I shifted to geology because I thought it' fun. I'm an outdoorsy person so it really suits my personality.

list bulletAbout my college education: You'll realize that there are so many things that already happened and that compared to these formations-land, sea, air-our span of life is nothing. Most difficult subject would be the geologic history subject. Most useful would be structural, petrology and geothermal energy subjects. Passing exams was difficult. There were numerous times that the teacher must adjust the passing rate for the students to pass.

What you need is wide understanding and lots of imagination because moat of the subjects you are dealing with didn't happen on the surface of the earth and not within the human lifetime.

list bulletMy current job: Geologist in a geothermal company

list bulletAm I using what I learned in college: Time management and being practical and learn to socialize with different types of people.

list bulletHow long did it take to find a job: Right after grad, I already got hired, but only contractual for 4 months. Than after 3 months, I got a regular job.

list bulletAdvice to people who are thinking of studying this course: Pursue it. You wont regret it.
