◈ Studied BS in Agriculture
◈ At Central Mindanao University
◈ Graduated 2007

list bulletWhy did I choose Agriculture: My parents run a small plant nursery with different varieties of plants and flowers. I loved to work with plants and flowers so I enrolled up a course related to my family business.

list bulletAbout my college education: I learned about different kinds of plants and how to cultivate them scientifically, plant breeding, crop production, and plant genetics.

What makes it more interesting and difficult are memorizing those hundreds of scientific names, as well as identifying each genus and species. I think the most useful thing I've learned is the knowledge applicable to our plant and gardening business.

You need to have passion in plants, for you to finish this course easily. You learn and enjoy along the way. :)

list bulletMy current job: My previous job was a agriculture technician in one of the pineapple plantations.
My job is in pest control, weed maintenance, fertilizing and disease management and control. It's an office work and a little field visit.
Recently, I got to manage our own farm and poultry farm. Applying all my knowledge, also I have gardens and landscaping business.

list bulletAm I using what I learned in college: Everything I learned about plant yield productions, weed and pest control, pest and disease management and the plant breeding techniques, which are useful in my gardens.

list bulletHow long did it take to find a job: It took me six months to have a job. After three months vacation, I applied and got hired in another three months.

list bulletDo I recommend studying Agriculture: If anyone whose passion in plants, flowers, or you want to be a future farm technician? then this course will be a right fit for you. You'll love the outdoor task, with practical planting techniques and methods. And you'll just learn and have fun. It's a good idea to have an interest in the outdoors and the land.

Employment is not difficult for an agriculturist. Many big farms needs technicians, consultants and farm related jobs.

Basic salary is up to 15,000PHP basic. And more than 20,000 PHP for any supervisor level job. And you can have your own business which generates a very descent income.

◈ Studied BS in Agriculture major in Agricultural Economics
◈ At Benguet State University
◈ Graduated 2013

list bulletWhy did I choose Agriculture: It was not entirely my choice, but I have no regrets.

list bulletAbout my college education: I majored in Agricultural Economics which is quite different from the other majors as it focuses more on the business side of agriculture. Whereas, the other majors focus on the study of the actual plant, soil and animal specimen. Agriculture is very scientific and well, difficult. Nobody appreciates the course like we do. Our subjects are not simply one plus one. We have so many laboratory subjects and hands on practicums. Oh, we also have agricultural engineering and entemology subjects, mind you. The course revolves around Economics, Plant Pathology, Horticulture, Animal Science, Entomology, Extension Education and Soil Science. Science is the keyword.

list bulletMy current job: I worked as an Agriculturist and a Marketing Associate. Currently, I am studying.

list bulletHow long did it take to find a job: A month after graduation.

list bulletDo I recommend studying Agriculture: If you love Science, this course is very much right up your alley.
but if you want to work in the government as an Agriculturist, you have to pass the board exam

list bulletAdvice to people who are thinking of studying this course: Watch out for the laboratory subjects. It may be hard to redo an experiment. Imagine taking care of an egg until it becomes a butterfly, or when your garden is a failure? It may take you a week or more to do it all over again.

◈ Studied BS in Agriculture
◈ At University Of The Philippines Los Banos
◈ Graduated 2012

list bulletWhy did I choose Agriculture: Interest in life sciences and the outdoors.

list bulletAbout my college education: I have learned that Agriculture is far more beyond the stigma of being 'a poor man's career'. In fact, it is one of the most promising fields as it addresses the constantly increasing food requirement of our ever-growing population.

Exams were not always easy. The hardest subject for me was Anatomy and Physiology as the course is laden with terminologies and involves a great deal of familiarization with the 'blueprint' of farm animals.

One has to be not just studious but also outgoing, as this course involves a lot of fieldwork.

list bulletMy current job: I'm a sales representative for UNAHCO.
I sell feeds and veterinary products to large-scale consumers, primarily commercial farms and feed-mills.

list bulletAm I using what I learned in college: I have been familiar with farming practices. Combined with technical knowledge, it made my sales job much easier to handle as I have an understanding of my clients's needs.

list bulletDo I recommend studying Agriculture: You'll never have a hard time looking for a job, as there are only relatively few Agriculture graduates each year.

Salary ranges widely, so better if you search for a job very carefully.
As you gain experience, it will open more opportunities for you.

list bulletAdvice to people who are thinking of studying this course: It will be the best decision you will ever make.

◈ Studied BS in Agriculture major in Agricultural Economics
◈ At University Of The Philippines Los Banos
◈ Graduated 1975

list bulletWhy did I choose Agriculture: The Philippines being on the tropical zone and being an agricultural country made me choose this course. It would teach me the know-hows of being an agriculturist especially, the profitability of the different crops and to study policies in agriculture

list bulletAbout my college education: I'm a graduate of BS Agriculture major in Agricultural Economics. I learned a lot! I was able to differentiate the different plants and their usefulness. I learned the how to's of animal production as we always have hand-on activities. As an Ag. Economics graduate, I learned how to compute cost, returns and profits in plant and animal production. On a macro level, I learned how to do forecasting of prices of commodities using various statistical techniques.

Agricultural chemistry was the most difficult for me. The most useful things I learned was on data analysis and forecasting. There were subjects where passing the exam was difficult. Sometime students failed or got low scores. Shifting to another course was sometimes done.

list bulletMy current job: I was a university researcher until last year when I retired from UPLB. As a researcher, I did agricultural policy research work and part of it is to go out on the field, visit agricultural institutions and talk to stakeholders of the research I am doing to gather data and information to analyze. I was also given the task of teaching the course on data analysis for public affairs. After working in the university, I continued working at home on projects of the university by analyzing survey data which I love to do and so I enjoy doing it until now.

list bulletAm I using what I learned in college: Yes, as agricultural policy analyst, we have to take stocks of information and data to be analyzed. I used and still using the statistical techniques I learned in college in my work as a researcher and as data analyst.

list bulletHow long did it take to find a job: After graduation I was hired immediately. As employers already came to us before our graduation and were told that we were already hired in their institution.

list bulletDo I recommend studying Agriculture: Nowadays, agriculture graduates, especially of UP Los Baños, become managers of big agricultural companies, become professors, or do research work in agriculture.

It is an interesting and fulfilling career as you will have contribution to our country because the Philippines has many agricultural resources,

list bulletAdvice to people who are thinking of studying this course: One should have a passion in taking the course. One should always focus in his studies. Study hard, lessen computer games and social networking (like FB) and be attentive to professors

◈ Studied BS in Agriculture
◈ At University Of The Philippines Los Banos
◈ Graduated 2010

list bulletWhy did I choose Agriculture: Actually, it was an accident choosing this course. I wasn't able to qualify with the course that I like so I have to choose another one among Agricultural courses and Human Ecology which my entrance exam result qualifies. I chose Agriculture because UP Los Baños is known for this course. It's their specialty so I took it though I really don't like Science, and English or Communication courses are the ones that I really prefer. So I really had regrets because I was thinking I would not have the career that I like in the future after graduating.

list bulletAbout my college education: I found my course difficult because it's a Science. And it's English that I like more than this. There are lots to memorize like terminologies, processes, etc. It has a very wide scope.

The enjoyable part in this course are the laboratory subjects where we study the body parts of animals, plant diseases and meat processes, to name some. For an instance, during our Dairy Science laboratory, under the Animal Science major, we are asked to make an ice cream. We brought some crushed Oreo cookies for flavor. It's amazing because it was my first time to enter an ice cream factory and it's inside the campus as part of the College of Agriculture.

I found the Economics subject really boring. I'm not really interested in this subject since high school. I don’t like graphs and analysis. But I had luckily passed the subject.

With this course, I was able to realize that without Agriculture, people will not eat since rice is our staple food especially in Asia. It's really important in our everyday lives. What makes it interesting is that you'll be able to learn the body parts of the animals that we eat and you will be amazed about their terminologies because they sound unusual. With this course, you'll know what does it take before selling the goods out to market.

When you want to take this course, you should have a lot of patience and courage in memorizing the terms and understanding the concepts behind every subject matter most especially with the major that you would like to choose. You should be also enthusiastic in doing field works - you must be a cow boy - when going to farms and performing farm activities.

list bulletMy current job: I'm currently working as an enumerator or a field researcher in my university. An enumerator is the one who conducts house-to-house survey in certain communities. I gather data from my respondents based on the questionnaire given to us by our superiors for research purposes.

list bulletAm I using what I learned in college: The things that I have learned from my agricultural subjects really helped me perform my job because most of the projects that I had is related to farming.

It's really practical to have some knowledge about this course since farming is very familiar to us because what we eat are basically plants and animals or come from these things. So it's very useful not only in my jobs but also in our lives.

list bulletHow long did it take to find a job: Immediately after my graduation I easily got a job because it has been my part time job since I was in college.

list bulletDo I recommend studying Agriculture: Yes, I would recommend taking this course for a person who is adventurous and has love for plants and animals.

In terms of employment opportunities, it has a wide scope, in research, farming business or other science related careers. And the demand for this course when it comes to employment opportunities will be almost the same every year since we need to eat and the food we eat needs to be processed and analyze. I think it's a fulfilling career. Based on my experience, I was able to meet different people especially farmers who really play a very important role in Agriculture. These people inspire me to do my job well because unlike them, even they're the ones who are working so hard to provide us food, they are the ones who has the lowest income. So I pity them, and I want to give significance on what they do for us.

When it comes to salary level, Agricultural careers are getting paid well. Like me, even it's project-based, I get more than enough of what the work deserved.

list bulletAdvice to people who are thinking of studying this course: You should love this course so it will not be too difficult for you if ever you'll consider taking this course. I believe that if you like what you do, you'll be successful on it.

◈ Studied BS in Agriculture major in Animal Science
◈ At University Of The Philippines Los Banos
◈ Graduated 1995

list bulletAbout my college education: The degree was both interesting and challenging at the same time because it relied more on applying your knowledge on animal nutrition. It does not require you to memorize a lot of facts and figures but instead requires you to apply them in order to improve livestock production.

list bulletMy current job: I started out with a job that is related to my course in college. I was an Area manager for several multinational companies in the animal health and agrochemical industry. However, I now own a small private school.

list bulletAm I using what I learned in college: I made use of what I learned from my course in college during the first part of my career. As a school owner and part time high school science teacher, I still get to use what I learned from my science courses in college.

list bulletHow long did it take to find a job: My first job was offered to me a month before my graduation.

list bulletDo I recommend studying Agriculture: For employment opportunities, I would say that a BS Agriculture graduate of UPLB is one of the most sought after especially when it comes to sales and marketing of animal health or agro-chemical products. Salaries of this type of career is fulfilling since it offers a large basic salary with commission schemes for exemplary sales performances. You also get to own your own vehicle.

◈ Studied BS in Agriculture
◈ At Visayas State University
◈ Graduated 2003

list bulletWhy did I choose Agriculture: I did not choose this course, only that I have no choice because my parents are not capable of sending me to college and an scholarship was offered but they will choose the course to take. Unfortunately, it was agriculture but my preference was Accountancy.

list bulletAbout my college education: In agriculture, the difficult part for me is the topics in taxonomy where we have memories by heart scientific names of crops and animals. The enjoyable part is soil sampling, soil analysis and harvesting of crops. The boring part are the lectures with boring professors and the interesting part is the determination of required nutrition for each to attain the highest yield together with the familiarization of planting technique and the variety of a crop.

The traits and attitudes that are required is I think, perseverance, passion in farming and positive outlook.

list bulletMy current job: I am now working as Associate Admin Officer. My tasks are mainly on accounting like reviewing invoices, issuing voucher and cheque, reviewing liquidations both from colleagues and partners and other administrative tasks.

My job now is far from what I have studied but I just what to share that after graduation I worked as agriculture technician but it is not fulfilling so I find ways to get accounting course while working so I can pursue what is in my heart at the beginning. And when start working as cashier in an NGO I found my happiness and realize this is really my passion not agriculture

list bulletAm I using what I learned in college: I was able to use what I learned in college when I worked as agriculture technician. Like for instance the technology in growing sweet potato and providing technical support to farmers in terms of planting the right crop according to the type of soil they have in the farm. Planting technique of sweetpotato with it's required fertilizers and the suitable type of soil

list bulletHow long did it take to find a job: I got the job as agriculture technician one month after graduation.

list bulletDo I recommend studying Agriculture: I do not have much to say in this part because I was not successful in using my course to get a fulfilling job. It was not my preference.

list bulletAdvice to people who are thinking of studying this course: Be sure you have interest in farming, like planting crops or raising farm animals. It is not an easy course to take but if you have the passion in this field, you will surely love it.
