Why did I choose Marine Transportation:
1. 3rd option because of financial status.
2. My father was a seaman when he had an accident onboard.
3. Financial matters. I'm the eldest and our business is not in good shape. We badly need some income to support my family. In my university I heard that you just have to study for 3 academic years then 4th year will be apprenticeship on board which is part of the curriculum to attain BS degree. While having OJT, the company gives me allowance of US$365. This is better compared to other course where they will be the one to pay the company just to get an experience. And I heard there are plenty international shipping companies that gives this opportunity in my university. I had visioned my future where being in seafaring industry compared to teaching (4th choice) is a lot better in terms of salary. All in all, even that I wouldn't like to admit it, it's all about the income.
My current job:
Currently my rank is third mate. I do paper works most of the time. When on open sea, I carry out navigational watch, ensuring the safety of life at sea. I'm also in charge in the maintenance of life saving and fire fighting equipment. And being secretay of the captain, expect plenty paper works/reports daily, weekly, monthly. When in port I assist chief officer in cargo operation and maintaining stability and safety of the ship
Am I using what I learned in college:
Almost all what they taught in school were used. Though of course actual experience teaches a better lesson
How long did it take to find a job:
Before I even graduated, I already had a company. I wad second year in college when I applied for the scholarship from the company
Do I recommend studying Marine Transportation:
Employment, yes. There are plenty Of shipping companies international and in fact most of these companies prefer Filipinos in their fleets.
No doubt, very good salary level. The salary of the lowest rank on board is almost the same with the salary of an elementary principal.
Advice to people who are thinking of studying this course:
The most difficult in this career is being far from your loved ones.
Interesting part is that you do travel the world for free.
Traits needed are that you must have plenty of courage to face the roar of the seas, literally. Because when you're out on the open sea specially on bad weathers, you'll hear the roar of the winds and the ocean like they're gonna eat you.
Be prepared for everything. Always be cautious with your words when on board. There are only 20 crew on board and you'll be together for 9 months. Daig pa ang PBB. Kaya pakikisama ang importante
