I. K.

◈ At Philippine School Of Interior Design
◈ Graduated 2013

list bulletWhy did I choose Interior Design: I chose this program because of my great passion for interior design. Eversince I was a kid, I've always loved decorating our house and sketching houses. And it's a dream for me to become one of the best interior designers in the country.

list bulletAbout my college education: Over-all, studying Interior Design is really challenging and fun at the same time. It's a really a test of putting your imaginations into concrete designs. Doing plates requires a lot of time, and most of the times, sleep is sacrificed just to finish a plate. To succeed in this course, one must have the passion for it. Come with this passion are patience and perseverance. If you're not patient with what you do, then you cannot come up with a satisfying work.

list bulletMy current job: I am working as a design consultant in a construction firm. I also work as part-time interior designer for other clients.

list bulletAm I using what I learned in college: I am really thankful for my school and my professors for everything they have taught me back in school. I'm now applying everything I have learned, from doing floor plans, applying ergonometrics, and designing in a scientific point of view.

list bulletHow long did it take to find a job: I got the job right after I graduated. The company is in need of a design consultant and I took my chance and got myself the position.

list bulletDo I recommend studying Interior Design: I would recommend this course to everyone who has a passion for it. A lot of career opportunities await, from designing houses, offices, hospitals, airports, mall window displays, the options are limitless. Every project is different with another since you're dealing with different clients. As for the salary, let's just say the bigger the project the bigger the compensation.

list bulletAdvice to people who are thinking of studying this course: If you're planning to take up Interior Design, be prepared for sleepless nights. Patience could really help you go a long way. There would be times when you'll run out of ideas due to lack of sleep but always find a way to keep your ideas flowing. If this could be any of help, take vitamins as well. :)

◈ Studied BS in Interior Design
◈ At University Of The Philippines - Diliman
◈ Graduated 2006

list bulletWhy did I choose Interior Design: I chose it specifically because of my passion for arranging & designing spaces, as well as being able to create a well-balanced relationship of the various aspects of an interior to serve it's needed function as well as provide the utmost comfort for the end-user.

list bulletAbout my college education: Taking up BS Interior Design was a rollercoaster of emotions. Firstly, it's a joy to be having dreams of being a renowned Interior Designer one day. Secondly, it's a pride to be able to foresee the moments you go up the stage & receive your diploma with this course of study imprinted on it as well as the logo & name of the school you dreamed of attending to. Thirdly, it's a reality check list you have to make while being able to take the first two as your inspiration to go through this - and that entails the following list:

1. Staying up all night finishing drawing "plates" was "Oh My God" damn hard. It was actually my first taste of the difficult moments being in this course & in this school.
2. Persistently giving your best creative & conceptual-based shot for these overnight drawing plates will actually reward you with lots of 1s in your grades & classcards - the most enjoyable moments during my 4-year journey in UP ever!
3. Consistently getting 1s & well, 2s will get you to the dean' "list roster! We actually call it "College Scholar" for academic term average ranging from 1.75 to 1.5 & "University Scholar" for 1.49 to 1.
4. Patiently lining up early in the morning during enrollment will actually land you in your dream schedule, subjects (for minor ones) & professors too!
5. Fervently waiting for your turn to ride the IKOT & TOKI jeeps will get you to the next building for your next subject (that is, if you were unlicky enough to get a cozy schedule during your enrollment).
6. Happily enjoying all school activities & joining different academic or sports groups will make your college life more fun than ever!

So if you are able to go through this reality check & you know you've got all the wits & persistence to strive harder academically & on the side breezing out all your pressures by enjoying college life simply, then what you've been foreseeing will definitely turn into reality. In the end, you'd want to say to yourself, "how was I able to go through all those things? Oh, how I'd love to go back & rekindle but it's time to move forward & upward."

list bulletMy current job: I am currently an Interior designer working in a consultant firm in Doha, Qatar. I conceptualize & design residential, office & even religious spaces.

list bulletAm I using what I learned in college: Yes, I was able to use my conceptualization & space planning skills the most.

list bulletHow long did it take to find a job: Since I was very persistent to share what I've learned & learn even more, I got myself a job a month after I graduated.

list bulletDo I recommend studying Interior Design: Yes. It's very fun, full
Filling & self-motivating since you get to meet different types of people ranging from clients to suppliers to contractors and you are taught to interact with them as often as needed as well as create a smooth relationship among them so as to acquire quality work in the end. In terms of salary expectations, I would say indeed there's so much to gain without you knowing it.

list bulletAdvice to people who are thinking of studying this course: As you see, Interior Design for me is not just a course of study, it's more of a passion. So if you know you have all the passion for designing & being able to create a good working or living atmosphere for different people, then this IS for you. For sure, you will grow & nurture yourself with it.

◈ Studied BS in Interior Design
◈ At De La Salle-college Of Saint Benilde
◈ Graduated 2000

list bulletAbout my college education: It was challenging because I shifted from an engineering course. At the same time, I had to take my major subjects at Philippine School of Interior Design and my minors at DLS-CSB because of certain arrangements that both school have. However, shifting to a technical arts course allowed me to develop both my skills in drawing and Math. I was good in Math but apparently not that good for an engineering course. I was more inclined to practical applications of Math which was used in Interior Design.

Another part of the challenge was being with a bunch of highly artistic people wherein I had to step up my game to be at par with them. It also made more fun and exciting to go to school everyday.

list bulletMy current job: Stay at home mom.

list bulletAm I using what I learned in college: It is practical, because we all live in houses or work in offices and having the background in interior helps not only to beautify surroundings, but also provide an effective area or space for which an area is intended for.

list bulletHow long did it take to find a job: Immediately

list bulletDo I recommend studying Interior Design: Yes, I would recommend my course to others, because there is a need for a lot of interior and furniture designers here and abroad.
