Why did I choose Mechanical Engineering:
When I was starting my 4th year HS, I asked myself what do I want with my life. Since we were very poor back then (no joke), the most logical and practical thing to do for me is find a course which has more opportunity in getting employed. So I read MB classified adds for the next 3 Sundays, and it was an engineering degree that was always being sought after, ECE then ME, then EE. There was no ECE course in R-IV before, so I chose ME, and fixed my focus on that.
About my college education:
This is one of the most difficult technical courses out there. Logical thinking, strengths in Math/Sciences/Physics, lots and lots of common sense, patience and most of all focus are the kind of investments you will need. If you are missing one, don't take the course, you will just ruin your life.
My current job:
I am now a certified Project Management Professional (PMP). I have worked as Project Manager, Planning & Control Manager, Proposal Manager, QA/QC Manager in the last 12 years. And before that, holding engineer/supervisory positions in service, shipping and construction companies.
I did menial jobs first, and then able to worked on a small repair contractor company. From then until now, most companies in PH require license, even though actual job doesn't need it. Which I don't have and I did not even attempted to for personal reasons.
Am I using what I learned in college:
Internal Combustion Engine, Corrosion Engineering, Machine Design, Economics, Management, Power Plant Design, Mechanics/Physics.
Do I recommend studying Mechanical Engineering:
This course will provide a wide array of employment opportunity, from sales, technician, engineering design, plant operations, quality assurance/control, consultancy and project management.
Advice to people who are thinking of studying this course:
If you will study this course, forget about extra-curricular activities (cost me another year), try to limit if no choice. If you focus and study smartly there will be no difficult subjects, practice (problem solving) always helps.
If your target is local employment or local consultancy, an engineering license is a must. Overseas, license is not that important though an advantage, and you will be measured by your total worth.
