Why did I choose Electronics & Communications Eng:
I chose this profession since my friend is really into it. Actually I don't like Math and science, but I really wanted an engineering course since it is in demand (needed to support my family). Going back to my first statement, I was told that if I want to pass an engineering course you have to have someone help you and my friend was actually good in Math. He even was a topnotcher in our board exam.
About my college education:
ECE is very broad and so you will learn a lot. Electronic subjects and of course Math are the most difficult. Coms were okay with me.
Exams are difficult. As I've said, my friend is intelligent and so I have to copy his answers. But not all the time, I still have to do it on my own as well.
A lot of us failed in class and a lot has shifted their course. In our batch, ECE has the most number of students however as years passed by only those with courage and determination stayed.
My current job:
I'm an Instrumenation Engineer in a mining company. I am responsible in installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, calibrating etc instruments and control systems used in the plant.
Am I using what I learned in college:
Maybe 20-30% of what I learned in school can be applied to my profession right now. During our time, Instrumentation and Controls were just like minor subjects and so I am currently applying it now.
How long did it take to find a job:
After 5 years of my study with 9 units failed and right after I passed the board exam, It was difficult for me to land a job. It was recession that time 2008-2010. I had to go to various Philippine Economic Zone authorities and submitted resume however for some reason a lot of the electronic companies are either in freeze hiring or even closing. I did have a lot of interviews and I was admitted however the salary was really minimum and so I chose to work in a call center company due to a higher income. I worked for over a year but then realized that I have an engineering title and yet I chose the BPO. I was really embarrassed (no offense to BPO workers, my respect to you since your work really is difficult). And so I contacted my friend (the one I mentioned earlier) and they had a hiring in a Telecoms company. 15k was the starting salary and so I took it. After 6 months working here, I resigned since a better opportunity came and this is my current work - Instrumentation engineer with a higher salary and more company benefits.
Do I recommend studying Electronics & Communications Eng:
Definitely yes. ECE is a broad course and so it offers a wide range of opportunities. During my college days I don't even know that Instrumentation Engineering was a thing, all I know is that you're either in electronics or in a communications industry plain and simple.
Advice to people who are thinking of studying this course:
As others say choose a course that really fits you well, that you enjoy the most, however for me choose a course that will challenge you, a course that brings out the best in you and course that will help you land a good job in the future. You need to consider all these aspects.
I'll give you some brief background on my studies and maybe you can pick up a thing or two on why you should consider this course.
Maybe my regret during my college days was that I was not focused in my studies since I was very dependent with my colleagues. I don't even solve math problems. I just memorize the formulas and the solutions lying in my bed. I just came to realize this when I had undergone my review and refresher course for the board exam. This time, I have to solve the problems with a pen and paper since I don't want to fail the exam. What was on my mind were the sacrifices of my family and so this was my "push" factor. Whenever I'm on the verge of stopping my review I just think
Was this review useful to you?
