Why did I choose Civil Engineering:
I have a huge fear of numbers that's why I decided to face my fears by taking up engineering course.
About my college education:
Civil Engineering, yes it was difficult for me at first because as I mentioned earlier I have a huge fear of numbers. But as I learn more about dealing with numbers and how to solve them, my fear turns to excitement. There were times that the course was boring. Boring times are those dealing with minor subjects and taking too long notes. What's interesting about the course was the OJT, 'coz it lets you apply the principles you've learned in the classroom. Another interesting part is the laboratory classes. Same as the OJT, lab classes let's you perform experiments you need whenever you're in the field or working site. Like soil testing, curing time and strength of concrete, simple surveying, and application of fluid mechanics.
On this course, you need a lot of patience and perseverance.
Patience to do all homework, projects, researches, drawing plates, and most specially hand writing lab experiment reports on engineering lettering. Perseverance, 'coz even if you fail how many times do not give up. There is a reason on every failure. Failure is the best teacher. I failed so many subjects during my time in Mapua, but I never quit. I strive and study harder.
My current job:
Currently I am working as a Design Engineer in an EPC (Engineering Procurement and Construction) company. My field of work is mainly of oil and gas industry and pipelines. I design pipeline which conforms with existing standards and international standards.
Am I using what I learned in college:
On my current job, yes. I've used some methods in basic calculations, determining the effect of fluid flow in a pipeline, determining proper support locations, and creating designs in the most economical and construct-able way.
How long did it take to find a job:
It didn't took so long for me to find a job. Civil Engineering is so broad that you can find a job anywhere or jobs that are related to it. For me, my job is mainly of mechanical engineering field but civil engineers can fit in too.
Do I recommend studying Civil Engineering:
Employment opportunities for a Civil Engineer are everywhere. Whenever there is a construction there is a civil engineering job. If not in construction field there is an oil and gas like where I am now. For me, these is an interesting career which I truly recommend. I enjoy what I do. I can apply what I've learned in college. After graduation there is a lot of opportunity you just need to explore. Don't just stick to civil engineering jobs. Civil engineers can fit anywhere in any engineering jobs. In terms of salary, locally, for a bachelor it's okay, but when you're planning to have a family, I suggest to find a job else where not local.
Advice to people who are thinking of studying this course:
For those whose studying Civil Engineering in Mapua, do not quit and finish what you've started. Strive harder. Study harder. Everything has a reason.
