Why did I choose Nursing:
At first, I chose this course because it was an in-demand course. It was never my decision to take up nursing, it's My grandparents choice.
About my college education:
Nursing Course in FEU was never easy. I almost gave all my life into it. Though at first, I never wanted to become a Nurse. Soon enough, I learned to Love Nursing. "Someday, I will go to US if I will become a Nurse"- that was always on my mind that time. Reality wise, That's the reason of all my classmates of why they took up nursing.. They will never tell you that they took up Nursing because they wanted to take care of the sick etc. But It's because they want to be Rich.
I'll share to you my college experience, I just loved nursing when I was on my 2nd year. You know, there's this system in FEU that if you Fail in the Battery Exam regardless of how intelligent you are or how good your grades are; If you fail the exam, you will not be part on the Institute of Nursing (IN) community and you will either be shifting your course or choose another school to continue your nursing course. So, I wanted to be in IN so I studied harder. I prayed and asked for a sign that If I passed the Battery Exam, Nursing is really for me, If not; then it's really not for me. To my surprised, I Passed it with flying colors. I was so happy then but I was also sad because some of my friends and classmates didn't make it. They transferred to other schools and some shifted to another course. So, since I passed it! I was accepted in the Institute of Nursing Level 3. It was the difficult part of all.
Major subjects are terribly difficult especially the Nursing Care Management or NCM. Exams became more tricky and mind-cracking that getting a Passing Mark was a Blessing to us. Many students failed; I even failed to some but I strived harder to pass the subject.
Since my 1ST YEAR in FEU, we were all guided by the RULES of the Institute of Nursing.. Hair Colors, Tattoos, Long Nails, Nail Polish, Short Skirts for girls are prohibited while Hair Colors, Tattoos, Long Hairs, untucked Polo, long nails are also prohibited. If you will not abide with the Rules, you will either be punished by Suspension or Community Service. When it comes to Lates and Absents. 3 lates are equivalent to 1 absent and an absent is equivalent to an 8 hour community service.
I can say that If you don't have a GOAL, you will not be able to Graduate and become a nurse.. Because I myself, If I didn't want to be Rich I won't be loving nursing. After all, it matters a lot. I can say that only those who really have a heart for caring and service will only be the one who will pursue this profession. Because As I said, Being a Nurse doesn't only require an Intelligent mind but also need a Caring and Compassionate heart.. Moreover, Faith in God and Believe in Yourself are the guiding light in succeeding in the Nursing Profession.
My current job:
I am currently a Freelance Private Duty Nurse: So I'm an overall nurse in charge of the patient. Thorough assessment, complete care and interventions are being given. I should always monitor the patient and be mindful of all the possible causes that may trigger the disease.
Being a Private Duty Nurse (PDN) is not an easy job because you will be liable if you weren't able to do your job effectively; most especially when something unexpected happened to the patient.. You should always be alert and active if you want to become a PDN..
Am I using what I learned in college:
Aside from the Skills in all areas and knowledge on how to handle patients in all aspect; I can better share the best thing I've learned in FEU and that's DISCIPLINE. This was a big help in our jobs because Attendance is very important and following the rules of the company should be mandatory. FEU Nurses are well-disciplined..
How long did it take to find a job:
After Graduation, I reviewed for the Board Exam at Seamed Review and Training Center For nurses and got hired after taking the board exam as Review Assistant and Marketing Staff. So, I got a job almost right after graduation.
Do I recommend studying Nursing:
Nurses here in the Philippines are not well compensated; nurses even agreed to pay just to have an experience in a specific hospital. So when it comes to employment opportunities, nurses lack it. But if you have a Backer in the hospital, you will eventually get hired and you will have a starting salary of 7,000 to 8,000/month while other Senior Nurses are being paid 15,000 above that's still very low for a course which you almost spent a million just to finished it. It's really devastating. That's why, if we really have a chance to go abroad, we can achieve our dreams. But if you want to stay in your homeland, apply for a call center job if you are particular with the earnings but if you love caring for people, be a Nurse regardless of the pay you may get. :)
Advice to people who are thinking of studying this course:
To those people who would like to take up B.S Nursing; Be sure that It's really your Passion and Decision because Nursing doesn't only requires an Intelligent Mind to memorize a specific disease but It needs primarily a Caring and a Compassionate Heart for those who are in need.
