list bulletAbout my college education: Like most of the graduating high school students, I did not know what course to take. I was just checking the application form of different universities and choose from the list of courses that they are offering. So, that was how I ended in AB Sociology.

At first, I did not like the course because it talks about a lot of theories that I did not know how to apply and I did not know the relevance to my life. But as my learning and understanding of the course widened, I finally understood the importance of my course in the society and the skills that I acquired from studying AB Sociology. It was a very interesting course for me because I was able to go to different places and learn different societies’ cultures and traditions, which you cannot do if you take other courses.

In taking AB Sociology you should expect that you will be required to write a lot: from writing a reaction paper to writing research paper. Don’t be afraid, it may sound complicated but practice makes perfect and since you will be required to write a lot of papers you will get the hang of it after some time and will be able to write your researches perfectly. The part of studying AB Sociology that I enjoyed a lot was doing surveys. I did a survey about the effectiveness of a new program introduced to a municipality thru a structured-interview with housewives and presented it to the class.

Just make sure that when deciding what course to take, think first what career you want to pursue and your interests. Because all the courses are difficult in different levels and it takes hard work and passion for you to be able to finish it and get your college diploma!

list bulletMy current job: Currently, I am a running my own business.

list bulletAm I using what I learned in college: The things that I learned in Sociology is very significant in my professional career. As a human resource personnel I interact with a lot of people with different backgrounds and I am able to understand our differences because of the learning I had in college.

list bulletHow long did it take to find a job: I was a working-student so after graduation it did not take me long to get my first job. I worked as an Human Resource personnel in an international company 1 month after graduation.

list bulletDo I recommend studying Sociology: I would recommend AB Sociology for others to study if they like to interact with other people, if they are open-minded and if they like to go to different place while studying!

◈ Studied AB in Sociology
◈ At University Of The Philippines Los Banos
◈ Graduated 1996

list bulletWhy did I choose Sociology: I am interested in studying human behavior. I was originally a BS Statistics major. During my first semester in college, I was having difficulty with Mathematics and even my final grade in Social Science was not high. After the first semester, I found out that I am more interested in studying people rather than numbers/figures.

list bulletAbout my college education: I have learned that our behavior is influenced by social facts. These social facts are something that are external to the individual - like the social group you belong, social context you are in and the social structure.
All the subjects were difficult. They only vary in the degree of being difficult.
All the subjects were useful. But I think, methods courses and rural sociology were the most useful. The usefulness of the latter course was because I worked in research institutions working with farmers.

list bulletMy current job: I am an assistant professor at UPLB.
I am handling both graduate and undergraduate courses in Sociology and the general education course, Social Science 1. I am assigned to teach the foundation course for Sociology major, General Principles of Sociology. I have at least taught almost all of the courses in sociology. I am also engaged in research activities.

list bulletAm I using what I learned in college: Most of the things that you have learned in college was useful. It is not only the concepts and theories, but critical thinking, being resourceful and being a team player were useful.

list bulletHow long did it take to find a job: Right after graduation, I was assured of a job. But, I waited for 2 months before the budget was released by the government for the job that I will be doing.

list bulletDo I recommend studying Sociology: The course might not be popular and people (especially the parents) would not understand sociology. However, after finishing BA sociology you would understand society better and you would be employed all your life. One can be researcher, teacher, development worker and even human resource development officer. Some students use it as a pre law course.

You can earn as much as P15,000 for a fresh graduate and P80,000 for more experienced employee.

Yes, it is a fulfilling and interesting career as you are dealing with people.

◈ Studied AB in Sociology
◈ At Ateneo De Davao University
◈ Graduated 2010

list bulletAbout my college education: My main reason for choosing Sociology as my course was to learn how to interact with groups and understand the way people think when they are in a collective body. This also helped develop my interpersonal skills, as well as my confidence in talking with other people.

list bulletMy current job: I currently work for the Ateneo de Davao University as a Social Studies teacher in the High School unit.

list bulletAm I using what I learned in college: For the Sociology course, I would say that it is practical, in a sense. Some students and graduates may not necessarily use it for academic purposes, but it is useful especially when speaking in front of groups. For example, those who have a fear of public speaking may at least quell their jitters through understanding the dynamics of the group he/she is addressing.

list bulletHow long did it take to find a job: After graduation, I decided to take the summer off. So all in all, it took me two months to get to my first job. This was, of course, done with careful selection on my part.

list bulletDo I recommend studying Sociology: In terms of employment opportunities, a degree in Sociology would greatly help in the fields of Human Resources, Marketing, and Education.

◈ Studied AB in Sociology
◈ At Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute Of Technology
◈ Graduated 2013

list bulletWhy did I choose Sociology: I chose to study this particular course because I liked to know more about how to deal with people with different cultures around me. I chose this course also because I want to become a social worker or a researcher.

list bulletAbout my college education: I learned many things in this course, that I should be objective and try not to be subjective to the people around me. Moreover, I also learned that what ever we will do there is always a stratification in every society of this world. Furthermore it tells us about societies, how to organized people, and how to deal with people with their own culture.

Thesis is the most hard for me, because it was really hard to find informants, but its data gathering was the most enjoyable part. The lessons we took were been applied during data gathering.

You really need to have patience for you to succeed in this course.

list bulletMy current job: For now I don't have a job because I am planning to take a masters degree.

list bulletAdvice to people who are thinking of studying this course: Be patient and be more understanding and try to read more about Marx, Weber, Durkheim and other Sociologists.
