Program Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering is a five-year program that provides knowledge and skills in mineral deposit assessment, mine feasibility, and mine development by applying techniques in natural and applied sciences, mathematics, and humanities and social sciences. The program also covers areas of management of mining operations, environmental protection, and mine progressive rehabilitation for the country’s social and economic benefits.

Recommended Senior High School Strand

Students who want to pursue a degree in Mining Engineering are encouraged to take the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) strand under the Academic Track. They will learn relevant topics that will be useful in their college life.

Admission Requirements

Qualifications

The student must be a high school graduate.

However, if they were not able to graduate high school, they may opt to take the Alternative Learning System (ALS) and pass the Philippine Educational Placement Test (PEPT) to qualify for college; the availability of courses for PEPT passers depend on the university.

The students must pass the College Admissions Test of the university.

Recommendation letter from High school principal and guidance counselor
Most recent medical and dental health record
Copy of NSO Certified birth certificate
Certificate of Good moral character
Copy of honorable dismissal
Copy of high school diploma

Program Outcome

Graduates of Mining Engineering are expected to be able to:

Design and conduct experiments while being able to interpret data
Application of knowledge in mathematics and science in solving Mining engineering problems
Ability to design a system, component, or process in accordance with engineering standards
Effective communication of Mining Engineering activities with the engineering community
Understanding the impact of Mining engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context

On-The-Job Training/Internship

During the fourth year of the program, students are required to attend an On the Job Training (OJT) in a company, organization, or agency that specializes in mining engineering practices and procedures. Students are given the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in an actual work setting. Usually, universities require them to submit a written report on their tasks, learning experiences, and hours rendered. Their work performance will also be evaluated by their immediate managers and will be submitted to their respective OJT coordinator. The number of hours required may differ in each university.

Board Exam

To become a Licensed Mining Engineer in the Philippines, a graduate of BS in Mechanical Engineering needs to pass the Mining Engineer’s Licensure Examination. The examination is conducted by the Board of Mining Engineering under the supervision of the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC).

Career Opportunities

Graduates of Mining Engineering may pursue a career path in various development companies or government agencies that needs specialized Mining Engineering services. They may apply for roles such as a mining engineer, process refinery plant engineer, static equipment engineer, instrumentation and control engineer, instrumentation and control engineer, and mining consultant.

About my college education: Mining Engineering is one of the diverse engineering programs. A very interesting career choice, if you love dealing with nature,field work and the beauty of the mountains. This program is not difficult for as long as you have good background in Mathematics, Science, Physics and Chemistry in high school.

My current job: As of now, I am a practicing mining engineer in Ontario, Canada managing tunneling project and waste disposal facilities of Ontario Power Generation, Nuclear Division.

Am I using what I learned in college: Without a doubt, my university training helped me prosper in this field.

How long did it take to find a job: After my graduation in 1978, in two weeks I find a job as Quarry Engineer in a cement factory in Antipolo, Rizal. From thereon, I never stop working. I immigrated to Canada in 1992 under skilled immigrant program which grant mining engineer as a top priority profession that Canada needs.

Do I recommend studying Mining Engineering: I strongly recommend a career in Mining Engineering for those kids aspiring to be engineers. Mining Engineering is a combination of both civil,mechanical,electrical & chemical engineering - four engineering programs combined into one. There is a never-ending demand for talented mining engineers both in the Philippines and abroad especially in the US, Canada & Australia. If you google engineering professions, mining engineer is one of the highest paid engineering professions in US and Canada.
