Why did I choose Elementary Education:
My mother was a teacher, and so was my aunt and other relatives in the family. I guess it runs in the blood. Financially speaking, it was one of the best courses around which offers security.
About my college education:
I learned a lot of things from studying BEED at NTC. From simple things like knowing the difference between a pupil and a student to complicated things such as how to manage a class and how to deal with a student's behavior. One of the most difficult subjects I have encountered was Math, and among the difficult assignments, although not paper/subject-wise, was being assigned to handle the Elementary Student Teachers Organization all while doing on-campus practice teaching and attending two other subjects in the afternoon. But it was all worth it, because through these sort of experiences I was able to learn how to manage time wisely.
Exams are difficult, yes, but nothing is too difficult to anyone who takes time to study. Some people do fail exams, but they are given chances through special exams and some other requirements needed to complete the course. Not many I know from the college shifted courses. Most of the time, those who enter NTC are very much decided, since the beginning, that they like to be a teacher.
Discipline, patience and hardwork, mostly, is what I think is needed in order to succeed in this course. The loads of assignment given plus other sort of works seem like a preparation to a teacher's unending tasks. Without discipline or hardwork, and especially patience, I think it would be quite hard to get through.
My current job:
Currently, I am a public school teacher. I handle intermediate classes and teach Journalism to both Grades V & VI pupils, as well as English and Filipino to other Grade V pupils.
Am I using what I learned in college:
Everything I learned from college was practical. From lesson planning to classroom management, teaching approaches and techniques as well as discipline, I was able to apply everything in what I do now. Even before teaching, every grammar and English lesson I've taken was helpful then, being a call center agent.
How long did it take to find a job:
I graduated October 17, 2009 and got hired at a company on October 23, 2009. The wait wasn't very long.
Do I recommend studying Elementary Education:
Yes. I would highly recommend BS Education as it has a very large range of employment of opportunities. There's the public school, the private school, tutorial services, as well as opportunities abroad and the like.
The job offers good pay with very good security of tenure. A fresh education graduate can probably expect P10,000+ salary working in tutorial services, P14,000+ working in a private school, and P20,000+ for the public school (plus other benefits!). An additional P2,000, I believe, is available for public school teachers who get promoted from Teacher I to TII, and the same for TII to TIII. If you become a Master Teacher, salary is within P30,000-P33,000; not to mention other opportunities to be promoted as a principal or a supervisor.
Advice to people who are thinking of studying this course:
Take the course seriously. Being future educators themselves, they have to study well and work hard to be able to reap future fruits of such labors.
