Why did I choose Marine Engineering:
I chose Marine Engineering because people say it’s an easy job and with very high salary. I thought that it’s easy and I can survive the course.
About my college education:
I never thought that Marine Engineering is hard, or maybe my IQ is a bit low, but I was surprised that it needed to study Physics and Math, my much avoided subjects of all. The most useful things I've learned were how to familiarize the engine, how to solve its problems and what to do when a situation happens in the ship.
To succeed this course, you really need to memorize it all, improve body strength and also common sense.
My current job:
I am currently a utility boy in a shipping company. I am still waiting for my schedule to my next on-board.
You should be a utility boy first while waiting to be on-board.
Am I using what I learned in college:
Yes, what I learned in school was used in the ship. As a marine Engineer, you should touch the engine yourself and that my learning is applied to it.
I memorized the parts of the engine so the job was easy for me, but I encountered many things that I haven’t learned from school. My seniors just taught me how to do things that I didn't know.
How long did it take to find a job:
I don’t remember how long it took me to sail in a ship, but I already have experience on the ship. It will be my second time in my next schedule. If you have connections, you will be on sail sooner.
Do I recommend studying Marine Engineering:
Yes, I would recommend my course because it’s true that it has a high salary if you work in the ship, but if you are still a utility boy, allowance is little. It’s a very hard work and messy but I can say that it is very enjoyable and all on-board treat each other like brothers.
The only thing that you would not like is that you will be away from your family, but if you can endure it, you’re good to go. It’s worth it after you see your family happy.
Advice to people who are thinking of studying this course:
The only advice I can give is, before taking this course, be sure you already have connections to a ship for a more immediate on-board assignment. Not like me, I don’t have connections with high position, I am still waiting for my next work in the ship.
If you already have this connection, then try to study hard, improve your memory and drawing skills. If your have a bad drawing skills, just practice it because I have a classmate that struggled for that reason. Also swimming skills.
