Program Overview

Master of Science in Information Technology (MSIT) is a graduate program that introduces students to advanced theoretical and practical aspects of Information and communications technology.

The MSIT program teaches concepts, techniques and principles in information technology and further develop skills in providing IT solutions to the problems encountered by organizations and companies. Special topics like business analysis, process engineering, systems correctness and performance are also given emphasis.

Master of Science in Information Technology vs. Master in Information Technology

Master of Science in Information Technology (MSIT) and Master in Information Technology (MIT) are very similar graduate courses. In terms of curriculum, they have more or less the same subject content. However, the MSIT curriculum integrates more computer science subjects than the MIT program.

A major difference in these two programs is their final requirement:
MS in Information Technology program is a thesis program that is completed with a successful defense of a master’s thesis in front a panel of experts.

The Master of Information Technology program is a non-thesis program that culminates with the completion of a Software project. A software project covers the completion of software and a user’s manual which validates the students learning out of a combination of the different core and elective subjects.

What are the admission requirements for MSIT?

Requirements at each school may differ, but these are the common requirements:
  • A Bachelor’s degree in: Information Technology / Information Systems / Computer Science / Computer Engineering
    However, an applicant with a degree not in line with this field may still be admitted in the program as long as he/she takes the intended number of prerequisite courses.
  • Graduate School Entrance Exam: pass the entrance examination held by the College.
  • Interview: pass the interview conducted by the College.
  • Certificate of Employment: some schools require their applicants to submit a certificate of employment to be able to determine the length of an applicant’s work experience.

What skills, traits and attitude will help you succeed in this course?

  • Logical skills – you need to have an advanced level of thinking which means that you are able to grasp concepts and lessons right away and you have the ability to put this into order such as when you are reading and writing computer codes.
  • Analytical skills – unlike in the undergraduate level, studying masters is different because you will do most of the things that are supposed to be the job of your professors. From looking for relevant books, reading them and jotting down your thoughts and ideas. Because of this, you have to see the logical connections among concepts and be able to apply them in the practice of your profession.
  • Reading skills – most of the time, you will be left alone by your professors to read a lot of materials that you will have to understand on your own. Long chapter exams will also be part of your daily meeting therefore you must have the innate love for reading.
  • Commitment – usually classes for master’s degree are usually held during weekends. Saturdays and Sundays are considered rest days most especially for students who are already employed thus you have to be committed to attend classes on such days.
  • Active Listener – while graduate school practices self-directed learning, there will also be times when your professors will give very long lectures for consecutive days, this is to emphasize the most important lessons which cannot be solely studied by students. It is important that you listen carefully and ask questions because your professors will not discuss lessons again.
  • Organization – there will be a lot of paper works when you study masters thus the ability to sort and arrange information in a systematic order is highly important
  • Interpersonal skills – in your master’s class you will less likely be working alone because professors love to group students to perform certain activities. You will encounter classmates who come from different age groups and background thus it’s important to be able to maintain good working relationships and adapt to different kinds of attitude.

How long does it take to complete the MSIT program in the Philippines?

The MSIT program takes 2 years to complete, if you take a full curriculum every semester. The program may also be completed in less than two years in schools who follow a trimestral curriculum.

However, most students who enroll in the MSIT program are employed, so because of time constraints the majority of graduates finish the degree in more than two years.

  • Information Technology Instructor/Professor
  • Systems Analyst – designs new IT solutions to improve business efficiency and productivity; examine existing business models and flows of data, discuss their findings with the client, and design an appropriate improved IT solution.
  • IT consultant – gathers needs and expectations of clients and work with a team to develop/adjust the business solution/system
  • Project Manager – to lead team composed of analysts and programmers; liaise with other project managers
  • Programming Team Leader
  • Systems Developer – maintain, audit and improve organizational support systems by working on the internal operations of computers, using existing systems or incorporating new technologies to meet particular needs.
  • Business Process Analyst – reviews business processes in order to gain a complete understanding of current procedures, identify improvements, document those processes, and connect business people to information technology groups in an organization.
  • Quality Assurance (QA) Analyst
  • IT manager – responsible for the computer systems within a company, overseeing installation, ensuring backup systems operate effectively, purchasing hardware and software
  • IT auditor – performs detailed evaluation and internal control and audit reviews of computer information systems. Develops and maintains audit software; consults with administrators, faculty, and staff on computer information systems operational issues.

list bulletAbout my college education: How my education track turn out is more interesting than my actual courses. Basically I was taking BS Biology for my Medical Course in the future, during my Biology years I enjoyed it so much because of the research culture, we are nurtured around importance of discovering things and finding our niche all through out the course, for me I was fascinated with water and fishes, that is why during my last years on Biology I took aquatic biology, which I really enjoyed, next is we are also asked to get foreign language which is Latin its a bit hard yet enjoyable. But even if I enjoyed the whole course, I just can't put into heart the idea of me becoming a medical doctor. I followed what I really desire for which is IT, I was to take another BS degree for IT but I was advised to try out the graduate program entrance exam for Masters, luckily I passed it, so I took MS Information Technology and now on my thesis, the only thing I can say is that the very core of the program will really guide you to be the best in the industry, you become more resourceful and a good problem solver which is definitely very handy when you are in the industry, and besides SLU has all the facility you need to train yourself with and be competitive when you are already on the real world.
