BS in Legal Management vs BSBA in Legal Management

BS in Legal Management and BSBA in Legal Management are very similar courses.

The primary difference between the two is seen in their curriculums. BS in Legal Management curriculum is more science based, it includes a balance of liberal arts as well as business and management subjects. Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) curriculum is primarily composed of a few liberal arts subjects and a number of business education courses may center around finance, marketing, accounting, management and other aspects of business. Both courses have more or less the same Law Education subjects; however, BSBA in Legal Management incorporates law subjects within the context of the business environment.

BS in Legal Management and BSBA in Legal Management have same duration of 4 years. They also have the same admission requirements and both courses require their students to complete an On the Job Training.

Is Legal Management a profession?

Legal Management is not a profession. A graduate of this program can be employed as support staff in a Law firm and other para-legal jobs. You can also use this program as a step stone to Bachelor of Laws. However this program for itself will not give you a profession.

What are the admission requirements for the BSLM program?

Requirements at each school may differ, but are generally the basic college admission requirements:
  • Must be a high school graduate.
Those who did not complete high school education may opt to first attend Alternative Learning System (ALS) and pass the Philippine Educational Placement Test (PEPT) to qualify for college. However, some universities only offer selected courses for PEPT passers
  • College entrance exam: must pass the college entrance examination with a specified rating set by the school.
  • Interview: must pass the interview conducted by the college.

What skills, traits and attitude will help you succeed in this course?

  • Reading Inclination – throughout the entire program, there will be a lot of law subjects that you will encounter, studying these subjects will require you to consistently read to be able to understand and grasp certain concepts so you must love reading.
  • Memorization skills – the ability to recall concepts that have been previously studied and apply it to new subjects and lessons.
  • Reading Comprehension – there are many subjects in the curriculum that will be very difficult to understand most especially interpreting laws and certain legal principles, it is important to be able to understand the English language correctly.
  • Communication skills – the ability to proficiently speak and write English and convey information in a clear, concise, and logical manner.
  • Analytical skills – the ability to review complex written documents, draw inferences and create connections between concepts.
  • Logical thinking skills – the ability to connect basic law concepts to more advanced law subjects and apply them in business scenarios.
  • Basic Mathematics – aside from law subjects, there are many business subjects in the program that require the use of certain mathematical concepts and operations thus it’s very important to have strong mathematical foundation.
  • Computer Literacy – knowledge of computer use and being able to understand application programs.

How difficult is BS in Legal Management?

BS in Legal Management is a fairly difficult course. The program is considered by many as difficult because of its loaded curriculum. It is a relatively new course that combines individual lessons in both business subjects specifically management and law subjects. Law subjects are difficult to understand, it needs repeated intense reading and to deal with business subjects which requires mathematical skills makes it a lot harder. Aside from this, most schools use teaching methods such as case analysis and case digest which are self-directed in nature. Many students are not comfortable with this because they are used to being spoon fed in high school. Lastly, there is the undergraduate thesis where a student must choose a topic that is related to both law and business.

How long does it take to complete the BSLM program in the Philippines?

The BS in Legal Management program takes four years to complete (Note: this may change due to the K-12 integration). The program may be completed in a shorter time in schools that follow the trimestral curriculum.

On the Job Training (OJT)

A student of the BS in Legal Management program is required to attend an on the job training (OJT) in a law firm, business company, or government agency. During the OJT, students are given the opportunity to apply the knowledge they have learned in the classroom. The OJT program is done under the supervision of a designated authority in the establishment/office which will evaluate the student periodically and submit the evaluation form to the assigned faculty member.

The number of hours required for the OJT varies from one school to another.
